Strange and unusual choices

We've had to start packing a bag for the hospital in case baby decides to surprise us early. This includes choosing clothes for the little one, which is a totally surreal thing to do. You imagine legs inside leggings, a belly inside a shirt, a head inside a hat. And you imagine all the unforgettable, intense moments that will happen between now and then - as soon as tomorrow, or not for another 6 weeks.

Baby has dropped. I'm told this is a milestone of the body getting ready for labour, which is good. But vigorous protests are constant now from my belly's squashed-up occupant, and I've started to waddle.

Both baby and kitty have become increasingly cantankerous - him from being squashed, and kitty from being informed multiple times that the bassinette is not hers.

Baby loves down dog

I'm feeling very blissed out these days (except for when I burn toast or when Justin suggests selling the kayaks, which is when I start bawling... forget what I said about not being affected by hormones).

We're doing yoga twice a week at Freewheeling Adventures, a studio about ten minutes down the coast from where we live. It's a window-surrounded space with wood floors and a woodstove, built on stilts over the water with the waves of St. Margaret's Bay crashing underneath. I have to make a lot of adjustments to the poses, but baby loves it.

Down dog especially, which creates a lovely hammock for him to stretch out in.

Already, we can't help but assign a personality to this baby.

Baby likes having freedom to move (just like dad), sleeps with his bony elbows sticking out (just like dad) and has a distinctly anarchistic sense of humour (just like dad, as attributed by uncle Julian). I never thought the movements would be so strong. Sometimes the fidgeting is from baby being happy, and sometimes it's from baby being cranky.

Baby likes:

  • Yoga
  • Porridge
  • Walking
  • Teaching mom valuable lessons about the perils of enjoying ginger beer

Baby does not like:

  • Ginger beer
  • Long car rides
  • Being squashed
  • Bedtime (uh-oh...)

Meanwhile, Kitty likes:

  • Peace
  • Quiet
  • Admirers
  • Attention
  • Compliments
  • OOoooos
  • Aaaahhhs

Kitty does not like:

  • Change
